From the tranquil shores of Laguna de Bay to the bustling streets of the town proper, Los Baños seamlessly combines the past and present to offer an experience that’s as enriching as it is enchanting. This article will guide you through your journey of discovering the many unique things Los Baños has to offer.

What is so unique about Los Baños?

Here’s a list of a unique combination of history and nature that you can only find in Los Baños.

Hotspot for hot springs

According to popular stories in the province, Los Banos began as a settlement in a barrio of Bay called “mainit,” meaning hot in Tagalog in reference to the hot springs at the foot of Mt. Makiling. It was in 1589 when it began using its present name, given by Franciscan friars.

The thermal springs of Los Baños stand as one of the town’s most cherished gems. In fact, these hot springs were deemed significant since their discovery by the Spanish friar Pedro Bautista in the late 1500s. These rejuvenating pools then encouraged the friar to open public baths, which were then called “los baños,” the Spanish for “the baths.” Eventually, this came to refer to the entire town.

However, these natural hot springs offer more than just a serene escape amidst lush surroundings. Apart from its historical significance, the thermal springs appeal because of their therapeutic benefits. In fact, many people visit the springs to seek cures for all kinds of diseases and illnesses.

Given the nature of its discovery and its healing promises, Los Baños’ hot springs are not only a relaxing destination but also a religious one.

Cradle of forest reserves

Los Baños is home to a remarkable expanse of forest reserves, solidifying its reputation as the “Special Science and Nature City of the Philippines.” These protected woodlands serve as an ecological haven and a testament to the town’s dedication to preserving its natural heritage.

The forest reserves not only contribute to the town’s biodiversity but also offer a shelter for various flora and fauna. Among them, the celebrated Mount Makiling Forest Reserve stands as the best example of this commitment.

Previously a national park, the reserve spans over 4,000 hectares and is a shared territory among other towns in Laguna and Batangas. However, the forest is now and administered area under the care of the University of the Philippines Los Baños or UPLB campus.

Still, it remains a shared area for scientific researchers, nature enthusiasts, and outdoor adventurers alike, making Los Baños a true haven for nature lovers.

Land of heritage sites

Los Baños is undeniably a land of heritage sites where history and culture converge seamlessly. At the heart of the town stands a centuries-old church—the Immaculate Conception Parish. The structure is not only a symbol of enduring spirituality but also a reminder of the town’s rich past.

Aside from churches, Los Baños also has sites dedicated to its illustrious heroes. One of which is the Paciano Rizal Shrine, the home of Jose Rizal’s brother.

Though lesser known than this brother, Paciano’s life was no less important both to the Rizal family and the Philippine revolution. As such, shrine not only offers a glimpse into the life and times of the family but also encapsulates their enduring legacy.

Beyond the revolutionary period, Los Baños also holds artifacts of more recent events in history. One sought-after site in particular is the Yamashita Shrine. Though the shrine itself looks unassuming, the stories and the history around it are overwhelming.

Serving as the burial ground of General Yamashita’s remains before its transfer to Japan, the shrine is a haunting reminder of World War II that bears witness to a pivotal chapter in Philippine history.

An academic center

University of the Philippines

Los Baños proudly bears the status of a university town, a distinction it earned with its prestigious academic institutions. At its heart lies the University of the Philippines College of Agriculture (now part of the University of the Philippines Los Baños or UPLB), a renowned institution of higher learning that has shaped the town’s identity. Additonally, its roster of school for primary and secondary students is impressive.

International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

Additionally, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), also within its boundaries, stands as a global leader in agricultural research and innovation. The synergy between these educational powerhouses has greatly transformed Los Baños into a hub of intellectual pursuit.

Moreover, it also fostered a vibrant academic community, making it a beacon for knowledge-seekers from around the world and solidifying its reputation as a distinguished university town.

The vibrant Bañamos Festival

As the culmination of Los Baños’ rich cultural tapestry, the Bañamos Festival brings together the diverse elements that define this town. Moreover, it acts as a grand stage where local historical sites, natural wonders, academic excellence, and community spirit seamlessly converge.

During this celebration, Los Baños showcases its natural bounties, unique history, and scientific discoveries.

Adding to the excitement, the Bañamos Festival is a double celebration with the town’s anniversary. As Los Baños commemorates its foundation day, the festival becomes a symbol of its resilience and commitment to preserving its heritage.

This not only offers a platform for locals to express their creativity and talents but also invites visitors to partake in the town’s cultural and historical richness.

Through this celebration, Los Baños reaffirms its identity as a place where tradition and progress coexist harmoniously.
