Derived from an Ilocano term, ‘lawag,’ which means ‘light’ or ‘brightness,’ the capital of Ilocos Norte gets more than the usual amount of clear sunny days and contains a distinct azure skyline. Hence, its moniker — The Sunshine City.
Though a small city, Laoag fuses the magnificence of natural and man-made landscapes through its panoramic sand dunes, lush greens, pristine beaches, high land lures, and colonial buildings that preserve the locale’s traditional small-town charm.
Laoag shelters one UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Paoay Church—also known as San Agustin Church. Built with the usual baroque style, the church is renowned because of its notable resemblance to the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia. It owns a remarkably historical three-story bell tower that served as an observation post for the Katipuneros when fighting the Spaniards in the 1800s.
Another remarkable bell tower in Laoag is The Sinking Bell Tower which provides mystery to locals and tourists. This bell tower is known to be sinking at about one inch per year since its construction without any scientific explanation yet.
Regarding natural landscapes, the Philippines has coastal deserts in Laoag that attract adventurers through sandboarding– The La Paz and Paoay Sand Dunes. Shaped by the wind and the sea, the slopes of these sand dunes offer a 4×4 ride and sandboarding privilege to the wanderers.
This jewel of the north also possesses strong and abundant Ilocano culture, annually evident during the celebration of the city’s “Pamulinawen Festival.” The festival goes way back to an infamous Ilocano folk song about courting a tough-hearted woman named Pamulinawen. It is also a feast to honor Saint William, the city’s patron, and serves as a reminder of how Christianity gives color to the lives of the Laoageños.

Much like the origin of its name, Laoag brings light to upgraded opportunities and lifestyle through its thriving economy.
Strategically located at the northern tip of the Northwestern Luzon Growth Quadrangle, Laoag is the heart of development in the whole of Ilocos Norte. The rise of the big three multi-billion infrastructure, namely Capitol Extension, Dapayan Commercial Center & Ferdinand E. Marcos Stadium, is highly anticipated.
Laoag also lodges the only airport in Ilocos Norte and the northernmost international airport of the Philippines, the Laoag International Airport. A few minutes from Laoag International Airport, a Spanish-themed house and lot community awaits to welcome every individual home, Camella Laoag.
