Transportation infrastructure plays a vital role in the development of any urban area. With the ever-growing population and increasing traffic congestion, the need for innovative transportation solutions has become more critical than ever.
There is quite a number of infrastructure projects constructed in the last decade that made a huge impact on the lives of commuters and the motoring public. Moreover, the opening of counterflow lanes whenever NLEX experience heavy traffic helps improve the road conditions. The NLEX connector road makes traveling to the north, a breeze. The completion of the Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) and Tarlac Pangasinan La-Union Expressway (TPLEX) reduced travel time to Baguio for at least three hours.
In the South, Cavite province and Laguna have become accessible through the improvement and opening of the Parañaque toll plaza and other toll road, as well as the the Cavite Laguna Expressway. In Cebu, the opening of the Cebu Cordova Link Expressway remains a vital segment in linking the city center to the rest of Cebu.
The Cavite Expressway
As the LGU and Cavitex Infrastructure Corp begin construction of the upcoming Cavite Expressway (CAVITEX)-C5 Road Link on the first quarter of 2023, we look forward to its profound impact on improving transportation to Mandaluyong City in Metro Manila and its neighboring areas.
“The Cavitex-C5 Link is a vital segment of the Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway Project (MCTEP), so far, we managed to open 3.8km (Segment 3A1 and 3A2) to the motoring public, serving more than 16,000 vehicles daily,” said CIC president and general manager Raul Ignacio.
The CAVITEX-C5 Link is a transformative infrastructure project that aims to connect Cavite, located to the south of Metro Manila, with Mandaluyong City in the north by bridging Cavite Expressway Road 1 to C5 Road in Taguig City.
This ambitious undertaking consists of roadways, bridges, and interchanges designed to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance the transportation network in the Greater Manila Area. The CAVITEX-C5 Link is set to bring numerous benefits to Mandaluyong City, making it a focal point of transportation improvement in the region.
The CAVITEX-C5 Link will span 7.7 kilometers and is designed to cater to more than 40,000 vehicles per day, lessening travel time for commuters and motorists going from Makati City and Taguig City to Parañaque City, Las Piñas City, and the province of Cavite by 45 minutes.
The CAVITEX-C5 Link is a multi-faceted project that includes the following significant features:
Extension of the C5 Road
The project extends the C5 Road, a major thoroughfare in Metro Manila, to Cavite. It will connect critical areas in the southern part of the metro to Mandaluyong City in the north.
Bridge Construction
The CAVITEX-C5 Link and bridge corp involve the construction of several bridges, including the Bicutan Bridge, Lower Bicutan Bridge, and the Laguna Lake Highway Bridge, to facilitate smooth traffic flow and connectivity.
Interchanges
Interchanges and connectors will be built to link the C5 Road Extension to existing road networks, such as the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and CAVITEX.
The CAVITEX-C5 Link Road 1 Interchange, a 1.9-kilometer extension road connecting the Manila-Cavite Toll Expressway to Sucat Road, is a portion of the CAVITEX-C5 Link project. It is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2024 as the Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation (MPTC) speeds up its construction.
This extension will cut the travel time from CAVITEX-C5 Link Road 1 Interchange to Sucat Road and vice versa by 10 minutes, making daily travel smoother and more efficient.
While the project is underway, travelers and motorists are given alternative lanes instead of passing through service roads to avoid traffic congestion.
In March 2023, the CAVITEX Infrastructure Corporation (CIC) and the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) agreed to work on the CAVITEX-C5 Link Segment 2. CRBC has completed various projects in the Philippines, such as the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge in Manila, the Central Luzon Link Expressway Phase 1 Package 2, and the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge, which connects Estrella Street, Makati City to Barangka Drive, Mandaluyong City, and caters to about 50,000 vehicles per day.
Benefits of the CAVITEX-C5 Link to Everyday Travel
The primary objective of the CAVITEX-C5 Link is to enhance connectivity within the Greater Manila Area. Several economic hubs, such as Makati City, Ortigas Center in Pasig City, and Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City, surround Mandaluyong City. The CAVITEX-C5 Link will significantly improve travel in these areas, making it easier for workers to commute to and from work.
With this, residents, commuters, and motorists in Mandaluyong City and the areas mentioned will have improved access to various regional destinations, including the southern provinces of Cavite and Laguna.
This project can even help the economic growth and development in Mandaluyong City since it will bring more accessible access to the city and attract more businesses, investments, and job opportunities from a wider geographic area.
That said, this project strengthens Mandaluyong City’s economic role in Metro Manila’s urban fabric, increasing commercial and industrial activities.
The CAVITEX-C5 Link offers significant advantages, including the potential for reduced travel time. The improved road network will allow residents of Mandaluyong City to reach their destinations more quickly and efficiently, ultimately saving them valuable time in their daily commutes and improving their overall quality of life.
Shorter travel times can also boost economic productivity since businesses can transport goods and employees to and from Mandaluyong City more efficiently. By diverting a significant amount of traffic from existing congested routes, such as Epifaño Delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), the CAVITEX-C5 Link is expected to help decongest traffic in important roadways, making daily commuting smoother for travelers and motorists, especially those coming from and around Cavite and Mandaluyong City.
Moreover, the CAVITEX-C5 Link will offer opportunities for better integration with public transportation, such as buses and jeepneys. This enhanced connectivity can improve public transit services and provide a more seamless transfer experience for commuters, making travel more efficient and hassle-free.
By reducing the time spent on commuting, residents can have more time for leisure activities, family, and friends, leading to a better work-life balance. Additionally, a less stressful commuting experience can improve mental health and reduce the negative impact of daily stressors on overall well-being.
The CAVITEX-C5 Link’s positive impact on public transportation is not limited to Mandaluyong City but extends to the entire metropolitan area. Better integration between different modes of
transportation, such as buses, trains, and jeepneys, can create a more interconnected transit network, making it easier for people to navigate the city.
This new road project represents a significant step forward in the development of Mandaluyong City and the Greater Manila Area, exemplifying the potential for transportation infrastructure to transform urban environments, improve quality of life, and contribute to the overall well-being of commuters and motorists.
With the successful completion of the CAVITEX-C5 Link, Mandaluyong City stands to become a more accessible, vibrant, and connected urban center within Metro Manila, contributing to the overall progress and development of the Philippines.
